December 7th

Today was my site visit at The Cake Pop Shop it was really interesting and I could tell I will being having a good time. I was able to meet  Laura the creator of the business who will also be my mentor. She was able to introduce me to some of the staff, show me around the kitchen, and all the good behind the scenes in a bakery. This company is a catering business which I loved because it's small and very easy to work around.

For my project we talked about maybe going to events and selling the products. But we are still collaborating on many ideas. I was able to get my schedule and hours today which was great and I was also told that I would be working in many different areas which is very exciting. I hope to get a taste of what my future may look like by seeing someone with experience.

From this internship I really hope I get to discover if this is truly my passion and a better outlook on what I can do in the future. I also hope I get the complete experience on working in a bakery. I fear that I can possibly not enjoy it and began to hate it instead of loving it. I don't want it to become something that I dread to do instead something that I'm excited to do. My dream would probably be to just finish the month with a positive attitude and have a bigger idea on what I want to do in my career.

My mentors name is Laura Dorsey she has been baking for a long time, she started                                                        off at home and then her passion just got stronger. She has a dog and is married,                                                              she's always willing to try new things and is never afraid to experiment with her                                                                  recipes! Laura is a great mentor and she's been making this internship super amazing!

My company's mission statement I would say is to stay successful and grow as a company.  Not only this but be able to become an independent company and have their own kitchen/place. Currently they're sharing a kitchen with another catering place, so they're not able to completely have their space. Another one of the company's goals is to hopefully open a bakery and get more known!

This may sound funny but honestly something I was shocked about was how worn out I would be by the end of the day. I didn't realize that baking for a full time shift would leave me with tired legs, but it's definitely worth it! Another thing I would say is how precised you have to be with the measurements of course I knew the basics with cups and table/teaspoons but they've taught me how to measure in grams with a certain scale. Also to check the temperature in sugar. Overall it's been a great week and I'm having so much fun.

So this is Sarah she's what I would call the head baker in this company                                                                                  besides my mentor! She's a great baker and has taught me many things                                                                              throughout me being here. As I'm getting to know her more she's told me                                                                           she went to school for baking back in her hometown (Wisconsin) and how                                                                           she truly found her love for baking. It's awesome being  around people who                                                                                                                                                          have the same passion as me.

I think many people benefit from this internship work, we can provide people with delicacies and make them happy. We get to show the public a view from our big windows as you see on the picture above. We all benefit from this work because we learn something new everyday and get to try different techniques and learn more from each other. I think baking is awesome and their are great benefits to it!

My main project that I will be doing is actually trying out the entire baking process on my own from start to finish as if I'm taking someones order. I think this will help me a lot to see if I can handle it, and it will show how much I learned. When I finish with this project I hope to gain lots of experience and have an idea of what it would be like to actually work at a bakery. I will also be working on making things for my class, so when it comes to presenting my work they can taste what I've made. So there are a few things in mind when it comes to this project!

The social interactions in my work place are very social, everyone is always collaborating with each other and always asking questions! We have an open work space and the only time it's quiet is when we have to concentrate really hard on an order. We always spend time socializing and getting to know one another a little more everyday! Either there is music playing or we are just talking. When you're in a baking business the number one thing is always collaboration and that is what we do everyday. My co-workers and I always give our opinions to one another so we could help each other out!

I see myself changing because I've grown a ton in my passion and have learned to have not only more patience but to be more open to other peoples techniques. I've learned a lot about myself which is that I am able to take a lot of tasks and finish them as well as I can. For example, if I'm given a few recipes and dishes duty I'll always make sure to not waste my time and get it done always at my 100%. I know all the changes that I'm getting are all positive and I am excited to see more!

1) Nicole's blog really interested me because it's something completely different than mine and  it's something I've heard her talking about for a while so it really got me excited to look at what she's been up to!

2) When I checked out Cady's blog it really made me learn something new. I had no idea there was a house rabbit society. I find it really awesome because I never knew she was interested in this and it made me more open minded on what organizations there are.

3) I loved how Jazzy organized her blog and what she is doing got me really interested because that's something I was considering doing for my internship but I found a different route. She seems super interested in it which makes it more exciting to read and I think what she's doing is great!

Overall all three of these people and I have completely different internships which I think is so refreshing because I'm not reading the same thing over and over again it's always something different. I think a question I would have for all of them is if they would consider changing their internship or if they could improve it what would they do.

Something I would say is challenging is to keep having more work. Since on Tuesdays and Thursdays we have other interns from other schools there's a lot of help. Which is awesome until we no longer have work to do. But so far we have been able to overcome it by getting more orders. We also share a kitchen which I was say is another challenge but we always do our best to share and get things done fairly.

I would say a limitation that I have really been struggling on is to step out of my comfort zone in baking. Which would be decorating, my mentor and coworker have really been pushing me to do more decorating which has actually made me appreciate it more. They've taught me that it's going to take time and that it's really not as hard as I thought it would be.

I think I have changed from this internship in a more intellectual way. I've become more responsible and have learned to appreciate a job. I believe that internship influenced the direction of my life by making me more comfortable in future to get a job and be able to step out of my comfort zone to meet new people. I think this was meaningful to my education because I was able to see how my future could possibly be and show me if this is what I truly want to pursue.

I absolutely love my internship and I wish it wasn't almost over! I'm actually starting my project this week because it's of course involving baking. I think the only challenge I will have to overcome is my fear of decorating! I've done it more often here at my internship so I'm not too afraid. I've learned that I could be very creative so I'm excited to see the final product.

I learned that communication is the key to anything! Having great communication will always help in anything in life! I also learned that putting yourself out there and asking questions is always great to do because it will only make you grow as a worker and make you have stronger skills. All this help me become a better person when it comes to working and it also helped me collaborate more.

My iPOL presentation unfortunately, wasn't able to get uploaded on my blog. But the tools I'm planning on using is my laptop and I'm just relying on my bullet points that I typed on each slide. I have all the questions titled as the caption of each slide (1 per slide) and bullet points underneath. I worked very hard and always did my best to contribute positive work and finish everything strong with what I was given.

I'm most thankful for the entire opportunity to be a part of this business and be able to contribute everything I could with them!  A couple things that I now appreciate are being able to decorate when it comes to baking I truly am now in love with it compared to how I walked into this internship. I was always hating it and let's just say I wasn't a big fan.

I also appreciate how inspired I am to get a job and pursue my dreams when it comes to my career. Before I thought my goals were alright and good enough but after this experience, I now have such an open mind and have such bigger goals.

I've definitely gotten really interested in going to culinary school after high school. But I will also want to attend a four year college to study business and so many more things that I've wanted to study. Internship has definitely got me more inspired to study business and to pursue my cooking career.

Some advice I would give to the incoming interns would be to always have communication with their mentor and to always enjoy internship. They should aim to intern at a place that can show them the field they want to study or pursue because that's the entire point of internship. I would also tell them to take advantage of this and always have fun.

What went well in my project is that everything definitely tasted great and turned out to look very nice. Something I would've changed would probably be to be more patient and not rush things! Also if I were to do this all over again I think I would probably try to make things that I've never done before for example like new flavors and complex designs.
